City of Hope was named one of “America’s Best Hospitals” in two specialties in the July 23 edition of U.S.News & World Report: cancer and urology. City of Hope’s rankings were reported by the Pasadena Star-News and by KNX-AM 1070.
The launch of ThinkCure, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ official charity benefiting City of Hope and Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, was featured by the Los Angeles Times on July 31 and Aug. 3, as well as in the Boston Globe, the Associated Press, KCBS-TV, KCAL-TV, KCET-TV, KFWB-AM, the Pasadena Star-News, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Whittier Daily News and Sports Business Daily.
George Somlo, M.D., co-director of City of Hope’s Breast Cancer Program, was quoted in a July 23 Los Angeles Times article about the role of support groups for patients with advanced breast cancer.
Timothy Wilson, M.D., Pauline and Martin Collins Family Chair in Urology, was quoted in a July 29 Los Angeles Times’ “West” magazine feature story about new ways of treating prostate disorders that minimize side effects and improve recovery times.
An announcement on Terry Peets’ appointment as City of Hope’s board chair appeared in the Wall Street Journal on July 23 and the Los Angeles Business Journal on Aug. 5.
Michael A. Friedman, M.D., president and chief executive officer, was interviewed on June 13 on “AirTalk with Larry Mantle,” a public affairs program on Los Angeles National Public Radio affiliate KPCC-FM. Friedman discussed significant findings announced at the 2007 American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting and answered cancer-related questions from listeners.
I. Benjamin Paz, M.D., co-director, City of Hope Breast Program, was quoted in an Oct. 23 Los Angeles Times article about a study by the University of Minnesota which found an increase in double mastectomies among women who find a tumor in one breast.
People magazine carried a story on Oct. 15 about City of Hope’s Music and Entertainment Industry Spirit of Life® gala featuring Miley Cyrus, Billy Ray Cyrus and Hilary Duff. The event was also covered by E! News, In Touch Weekly and OK! and Billboard.com.
Products benefiting City of Hope’s breast cancer program were featured in the Oct. 15 issue of Us Weekly.
A collaborative clinical trial between City of Hope and Caltech was featured in “Curious,” a documentary series from WNET-TV in New York and Caltech. The segment highlights Stephen J. Forman, M.D., the Francis and Kathleen McNamara Distinguished Chair in Hematology and Hematoietic Cell Transplantation, Yun Yen, M.D., Ph.D., associate director for translational research, and Mark Davis, Ph.D., Warren and Katharine Schlinger Professor of Chemical Engineering, Caltech, testing a promising new cancer therapy using nanoparticles to minimize side effects. The program is airing on PBS affiliates nationwide.
An Oct. 4 New York Times.com article on choosing products that support breast cancer charities included a link to City of Hope’s cause-related marketing Web site.

City of Hope’s 17th Annual Celebrity Softball Challenge, featuring country artists Carrie Underwood, Vince Gill, Craig Morgan and others, was highlighted by People magazine on June 8, CMT.com on May 2, OK! Magazine and Life & Style Weekly on June 25, and Nashville-based television stations WSMV-TV (NBC), WZTV-TV (Fox) and WTVF-TV (CBS).
