Since its founding more than two decades ago, the Nob Hill Chapter of Sunrise, Fla., has seen impressive growth from just 35 individuals in its infancy to 752 members today. The group also has proven to be a solid fundraising force, raising more than $2 million since 1988.
Founded by three enthusiastic boosters — Adele Gilmore, Phyllis Nilson and Sara Spitalnik — the chapter now benefits from equally devoted group leaders and trustees who have guided it into another successful era of fundraising.
Longtime chapter member Ethel Tannen recently reflected on the group’s myriad accomplishments through the years. “One of our earliest and most celebrated triumphs was our first Spirit of Life® dinner in 1988, which really helped to bring us together as a chapter,” she said. “This was followed by the success of our indoor walk at the Sawgrass Mills Mall in 1994. Although the walk began with just 250 walkers, it grew in its best year to a 5,000-people strong extravaganza.”
Nob Hill Chapter members’ creativity has played a pivotal role in the group’s success. Members have organized all kinds of fundraisers, from large-scale poker parties and mah-jongg tournaments to festive luncheons and trips to the Catskill Mountains in New York. Each year, the group also wraps gifts at the Sawgrass Mills Mall, raising funds from busy holiday shoppers.
