“Bequests and other types of planned gifts have helped make City of Hope what it is today,” said Amy Goldman, vice president of gift planning. “These generous gifts continue to be essential to our continued strength and future growth.”
The Legacy of Hope Society recognizes City of Hope supporters who include the institution in their estate plans. When donors tell City of Hope that they have included the institution in their will or have created a CGA or charitable trust, they receive a certificate honoring their gift. Each donor’s name is also inscribed on the Windows of Hope, which is a beautiful glass donor recognition wall located in the second-floor atrium of the Geri & Richard Brawerman Center for Ambulatory Care. Donors also receive regular briefings on the progress of City of Hope’s efforts.
“There is no minimum gift requirement for joining the Legacy of Hope Society, because we want as many people as possible to share in the future of this remarkable institution,” said Goldman.
Members of the Legacy of Hope Society cited a variety of reasons for their planned giving. Henry Howard, M.D., an ardent champion of City of Hope, and his wife, Hope, named research in diabetes as a major interest. Together, they decided to bequeath $7 million to the institution.
Longtime supporters Marshall and Janice Brumer have bequeathed a portion of their estate to City of Hope. The Brumers have led a Washington state volunteer chapter, and they are keenly interested in City of Hope’s efforts in pediatric cancer.
The society has more than 800 members who have pledged a range of gifts from outright bequests to charitable remainder trusts. “We expect that number to grow dramatically in the next few years as we continue to promote the program,” said Jay O’Neal, senior gift planning officer. “It is our way of showing our donors how much we appreciate their generosity.”
